How did you hear about volunteering opportunities for your profession’s charity?
I was originally a board member for SBA The Solicitors’ Charity. When I was no longer able to be part of the board I took on the role as an Area Representative instead. I found it less time consuming in terms of my day job.
The beneficiaries I have been dealing with reflect real life problems
After learning of the experiences that beneficiaries go through, does anything surprise you?
Nothing surprises me, the beneficiaries I have been dealing with reflect real life problems. They have a multiple disadvantages. These could be bereavement, poor mental health or a physical disability that has impacted on their ability to continue working and be self-sufficient.
You must have seen the trickle-down effect this can have on personal finances?
Yes, these issues can cause beneficiaries to be unable to work or find a new job. Especially if they have been out of work for some time.
Volunteering is an effective way to give back to a profession that has given me so much
What do you personally gain from your experience as an Area Representative volunteer?
Volunteering is an effective way to give back to a profession that has given me so much. It’s important to support people who have not had such a good experience. This could be through misfortune or an employment situation.
Beneficiaries may find it difficult to access the help they need without guidance
Do you feel you make a difference to peoples’ lives?
Yes, I think so. Beneficiaries may find it difficult to access the help they need without guidance. They benefit from our help in leading them through the process, assisting with the procedures and paper work to get financial support from the charity.
Would you recommend volunteering to others in the legal profession?
Absolutely, without hesitation.
SBA The Solicitors’ Charity is recruiting Area Representative volunteers across England and Wales. We need your help in assisting potential beneficiaries in the application process. This involves meeting them on a one-to-one basis and providing feedback to SBA.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to be there for fellow solicitors in times of personal financial need. By giving your time, you can do much to make positive changes to those experiencing financial hardship.
