SBA seeks new Trustees

SBA is the benevolent fund for solicitors, whether past or present, and their dependants.  It has been working at the heart of the profession for over 150 years to ensure that no solicitor is unsupported in times of need or crisis.

Our beneficiaries come from all kinds of legal practice but they all share a single characteristic: they do not have the resources to pay for the normal things in life which most people take for granted.  That is why SBA’s primary activity is to assist via outright grants and interest-free loans (usually secured), though we also provide bespoke advice on career transition and personal insolvency.

Over the past 5 years, SBA has distributed an average of over £1M per year in financial assistance.

New talent for the SBA Board of trustees

SBA has made excellent progress in recent years in attracting new talent to its Board.  Six trustees – all women – have joined since 2012.  Some were specifically recruited to fill particular skill gaps in SBA’s governance, while others have brought fresh and welcome perspectives arising from their different legal backgrounds.

We are currently looking to appoint two new trustees, who need to be either current or former solicitors.  As a member of the SBA Board, you will have oversight of our strategic vision and objectives, as well as sharing specific statutory duties, such as ensuring that we comply with charity and company law and that we use resources responsibly. The charity is constituted as a company limited by guarantee.

If you would like to be part of this important work, we would love to hear from you.   We are especially interested in people with experience in:

  • marketing and communications
  • investment management

The positions are unremunerated but we reimburse reasonable travel expenses.  There are four Board meetings in Chancery Lane a year, as well as an annual strategy “Away-Day”.  Trustees serve for an initial term of two years, followed by up to two further periods of four years each.

How to apply

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter which indicates your motivation for joining us to sec@sba.org.uk or by post to SBA The Solicitors’ Charity, 1 Jaggard Way, London, SW12 8SG.  Prospective candidates will be invited to observe the Board meeting on 16 March 2016 as part of the induction process.

SBA The Solicitors’ Charity is an equal opportunities employer with a commitment to diversity.  We are interested in hearing from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.  We are particularly keen to diversify our Board in terms of age range and ethnicity.

You can download a summary of the Trustee role here.

Closing Date: 31 January 2016
