How we help
The SBA was founded in 1858 and is the principal nationwide charity for solicitors
in England and Wales. Our aim is to help solicitors and their dependents when
things go wrong because
of ill health, serious accident or any other misfortune.
Who do we help?
The answer is people just like you and your dependents… that is if you have
been admitted to the Roll of Solicitors for England and Wales.
Who qualifies for our help?
The individual circumstances of our beneficiaries vary enormously but they
may be people who have suffered an accident, people in serious need (for
whatever reason), or people who have been struck down by a debilitating disease
like MS or mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The
vast majority are already receiving State benefits.
How you can help us
Apart from income from investments, all our money comes from people like you
in the form of donations, legacies, fundraising events and subscriptions.
We urge every solicitor to consider how they can contribute and, if you are
not already a member of the SBA, please give it serious thought.
How to become a member of the SBA
Simply complete the application form. To cut down on our administrative costs
we would be grateful if you could also complete the Bankers Order Form.
Gift Aid
Since 6 April 2000 the SBA has been able to reclaim tax on subscriptions and
donations. If you are a taxpayer please complete and return the Gift Aid
declaration.
Your firm can pay by block subscription
If you wish your firm to pay by block subscription on behalf of partners and
assistant solicitors, just complete the form.We will send you a Gift Aid
Declaration.
You can donate unclaimed monies in your Client Account
To do this write to The Law Society for permission under Rule 22 of
Solicitors Accounts Rules 1998 then transfer the money from Client
to Office Account ready
to be paid to us. We will supply you with a letter of indemnity. To find
out more call us and ask for the SBA Chief Executive or look on the
